Su luz clara y limpia, sus casas blancas y azules, hacen de esta ciudad una de las mas bellas de Marruecos.Por eso es un destino irresistible para un buen número de pintores y artístas. Chaouen también denominada "La perla del norte", es una ciudad de cautivadora belleza, a lo que contribuye su arquitectura de diseño popular mediterráneo, con los azules y añiles de sus puertas centenarias y los blancos añilados de las paredes, éstas cubiertas con capas y capas y más capas de cal.
Las gentes de Chaouen pintan las paredes y los suelos de las casas varias veces al año, e incluso pintan el suelo de las calles (muchas de ellas con forma de irregulares escalinatas) coincidiendo con los cambios de estación y las celebraciones anuales. Este trabajo casi obsesivo, cuyo objetivo es purificar, higienizar, aportar frescor y ahuyentar a los insectos, ha forjado la singularidad de la población. Las brochas atadas a palos de escoba como prolongación de los brazos se usan para pintar las zonas más altas, pero allí donde no llegan mantienen sus colores ocres amarillos y rojizos. Como las capas de pintura no se dan el mismo día, los habitantes de Chaouen consiguen sin quererlo una variedad de matices de blancos, azules y añilados sorprendente. Hasta el punto de que ha surgido una agrupacón de vecinos que vela por que las casas y las calles se pinten con los tonos tradicionales de la ciudad.
