All his friends would go to movies on Friday nights
They'd be drinking beer and acting like clowns
But he would go to see a lady on the other side of town

She lived just a block away from Blue Street
Near the cemetery grounds 　
In a two story house by the river
On the other side of town

And the lady on the other side of town
Never tried to make him cry or put him down
And today he wished the lady could be found
On the other side of town

She was 34 and he was 19 　
It was a social oddity
But nobody knew save the cat and the wind 　
That an older woman loved him

They'd play Joni Mitchell records for hours 　
Smoking cigarettes and watching TV
On a mattress on the floor by the window
Where she made love to him
" I'll make you some tea," the lady would say 　
" If you would play piano for me "

And the lady missed her husband
She talked of her divorce all the time
Oh , she missed her lover 　
And he was missing his
Cause his lover was an actress
She made him promises and let him down
So he had to find his love from a lady 　
On the other side of town

The cold icy beam of the moonlight
Cast its shadows on their bodies that danced
And he noticed that the lady had fallen asleep
So he slipped on his pants
And he wrote her a note on the table
Then he put the pencil down
Said that he was gonna leave the lady
On the other side of town

As she closed the gate behind him
The tears welled up in her eyes
With the note in her hand at the window
She was sadly waving good - bye
Well he never knew how much that he loved her
And the thought never did occur
That someday he'd be somewhere far away
And still be thinking of her...
